Battle of Falling Waters 1863 Foundation, Inc.                                                       Williamsport, Maryland

 

The July 14, 1863 Battle of Falling Waters was the final battle of the Gettysburg Campaign in Maryland. It was fought in rural Washington County not far from the canal town of Williamsport. The Battle of Falling Waters 1863 Foundation, Inc. is a Maryland non-profit corporation dedicated to preservation and education.

 

Mission (From the By-Laws)

The purpose of the “Foundation” shall be:

  • To preserve land(s) on which the battle was fought and any witness objects; such as trees and man-made structures including, but not limited to trenches, rifle pits and earthworks.
  • To provide a visitor center/museum and the erection of interpretative signs, markers and walking trails, where possible, and to promote tourism associated with the battle.
  • To educate using publications, including brochures, books, pamphlets, maps, etc. that tell the story of the battle, and the effects of its outcome.
  • To support events that commemorate the battle, (including living history demonstrations, tours, and lectures); and to cooperate with other groups and organizations with similar goals.
  • To maintain a Website providing the Mission Statement, By-Laws, general information on the battle, membership requirements and dues, meeting dates and times, and other information related to the “Foundation”.

    I saw your article in Civil War News and have an ancestor who fought there

    My great, great grandfather, Llewellyn Parks Winn, was under Pettigrew, and was shot off his horse at this battle and captured. He was taken to the Frederick hospital (Hessian Barracks), convalesced for 9 months, then escaped in April, 1864.

    I would really enjoy seeing this battlefield to understand and appreciate what happened there. Your foundation is doing a wonderful thing.

    Is there a schedule of when guided tours are given? I would be more than glad to make a donation to the Foundation.

  4. Greetings,
    I am a past president of the board of the Old Court House Civil War Museum in Winchester VA and currently serve as a docent.

    I have also helped research and prepare exhibit materials for the museum. My most recent project was an exhibit on the Gettysburg officers graffiti. I cannot attach an image of the graffiti but would be happy to share it with you.

    These two officers are listed in the graffiti:

    1st Lt. Edward Potter, 6th Michigan Cavalry, Company C
    2nd Lt. James H. Kellogg, 6th Michigan Cavalry, Company H

    The stories about what happened to them after their capture is fascinating.

  5. My great grandfather X3 participated in the Battle of Falling Waters in July 1863 after going there from the fighting at Gettysburg. The 18th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry “Company M” participated in the Battles at Winchester and The Bristoe Campaign where he was captured and made a Prisoner of War at Belle Island, Virginia for 10 months until exchanged, among the last in the War to be returned to Camp Parole in Maryland. He served the rest of the War in and near Winchester and was mustered out in October 1865. He died in 1906 still suffering from sickness incurred during his imprisonment and wounds.

  6. my great-great-grandfather Richard Ivey Bird was a 1st sergeant in the 22nd North-Carolina infantry regiment and he was captured at Falling Waters. He was from McDowell county, NC and is buried in Montfort Cove, McDowell Co.
